Did you know there are 850,000 people with Dementia in the UK? 225,000 will develop Dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes. This means that as we live longer we will all know someone who has Dementia.
At the end of 2017 all our staff at Compass House became Dementia Friends following a dementia awareness session during a staff training afternoon. The team came up with some great ideas about how we can support our patients with dementia and we will be implementing these over the coming months.

To link in with our work to become a dementia friendly practice, we have been working on a pilot scheme with our local
Alzheimer’s Society and this will involve a Dementia Support Worker being present in the surgery once a month to give
expert practical advice and support to help patients or their carers who are dealing with a dementia diagnosis.
Dementia Support Workers / Dementia Advisers are able to offer one to one help to either patients or carers in understanding dementia & how to cope with the day-to-day challenges it brings and prepare for the future. This includes helping them access
other support services, and build support networks within the local community.
With over 225,000 people diagnosed each year it is likely we will all know someone affected by dementia so we hope that
this step in working more closely with the Alzheimer’s Society and having the presence of the Dementia Support Worker
here every month will be a great support to both patients and carers.
