Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, sexuality, ethnicity, disability, income or background.
What is domestic abuse?
Recognise domestic abuse
Domestic abuse is not always easy to recognise. It can be physical, emotional, sexual, psychological, financial or digital. It can happen in a relationship, after a relationship has ended, or between people who live together or are connected as family.
You may be experiencing domestic abuse if your partner, ex-partner, family member or someone you live with:
stops you seeing family or friends
makes you feel frightened, threatened or controlled
controls your money or prevents you from accessing essentials
checks, monitors or restricts your phone, internet or social media use
puts you down, humiliates you or makes you feel worthless
hurts you physically
pressures you into sexual contact
blames you for their behaviour or tells you that you are overreacting
Domestic abuse can include:
coercive or controlling behaviour
emotional or psychological abuse
financial or economic abuse
online or digital abuse
threats, intimidation or harassment
physical abuse
sexual abuse
Some signs of domestic abuse may include feeling isolated, withdrawn, anxious or afraid. You may also have unexplained injuries, feel unable to leave your home, be stopped from going to work, school or college, or feel that someone else is controlling your choices, money, contact with others, or access to support.
You do not have to wait for an emergency situation to find help. If domestic abuse is happening to you, it’s important to tell someone and remember you’re not alone.
