Home Blood Pressure Monitoring

Did You Know…

High blood pressure affects over 16 million people in the UK.

The higher your blood pressure, the greater your risk of stroke, heart attack and heart failure.

High Blood Pressure rarely has any symptoms. The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to have it measured. It can be treated and sometimes prevented and there are many things that you can do to help lower it. These include:

  • stopping smoking
  • losing weight
  • increasing exercise
  • reducing salt intake
  • reducing alcohol intake

Our goal is to help you to take control of your high blood pressure. For more information please visit https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/lifestyle/what-is-blood-pressure/

Blood Pressure monitoring machines are available to buy from local chemist and many supermarkets. Prices now start from as little as £15.00. Many of our patients have purchased their own machines and then provide us with their blood pressure measurements.

How to record your readings

Using a validated monitor:

  1. Take the blood pressure at the same time every day for a week (7 consecutive days). Sit down at a table (if able), in a quiet environment with both feet on the floor. Rest your arm on the table so the blood pressure cuff is at about the same height as your heart.
  2. Take two consecutive measurements at least 2 minutes apart. Record the second reading only.
  3. Record the Systolic (1st reading), Diastolic (2nd reading) and Heart Rate/ Pulse (3rd reading)
  4. Once you have recorded your daily readings for a week please submit the readings using our online form below. We recommend the online submission of the blood pressure recordings to reduce the Covid19 virus transmission via papers. Alternatively this can be completed and posted to the surgery.
