Home Blood Pressure Monitoring

Did You Know…

High blood pressure affects over 16 million people in the UK.

The higher your blood pressure, the greater your risk of stroke, heart attack and heart failure.

High Blood Pressure rarely has any symptoms. The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to have it measured. It can be treated and sometimes prevented and there are many things that you can do to help lower it. These include:

  • stopping smoking
  • losing weight
  • increasing exercise
  • reducing salt intake
  • reducing alcohol intake

Our goal is to help you to take control of your high blood pressure. For more information please visit:

Blood Pressure monitoring machines are available to buy from local chemist and many supermarkets. Prices now start from as little as £15.00. Many of our patients have purchased their own machines and then provide us with their blood pressure measurements.

How to record your readings

Things to avoid 30 minutes before BP measurement: Food, Alcohol, Exercise, Smoking, Bathing

Things to avoid 30 minutes before BP measurement: Food, Alcohol, Exercise, Smoking, Bathing

Using a validated monitor:

  1. Take the blood pressure at the same time every day for a week (7 consecutive days – AM and PM). Sit down at a table (if able), in a quiet environment with both feet on the floor. Rest your arm on the table so the blood pressure cuff is at about the same height as your heart.
  2. Take two consecutive measurements at least 2 minutes apart. Record the second reading only.
  3. Record the Systolic (1st reading), Diastolic (2nd reading) and Heart Rate/ Pulse (3rd reading)
  4. Once you have recorded your daily readings for a week (AM and PM) please submit the readings using our online form – link below. Alternatively this can be completed and posted to the surgery.
